SHINee’s recent comeback with their title track Don’t Call Me definitely showcased their amazing vocals, superior dancing skills, and their overall undeniable performance charisma. Both fans and non-fans raved about this comeback especially since they had 3 years of inactivity due to required military enlistment in South Korea.

1. SHINee debuted on May 25, 2008
SHINee is a five-member group (Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin) under the label company SM Entertainment.They were introduced as a contemporary R&B group and were labelled to be trendsetters not only in music and dance but also in fashion.
The name SHINee (샤이니) is a combination of the word shine which means ‘light’ and the suffix -ee which translates to ‘one who receives the light’. And in more than 10 years of their career, this group has really captured the attention of many and earned themselves a spotlight in the industry. And in return, they have showered their fans, Shawols (from SHINee World), with so much love and appreciation as well.
SHINee’s official color is Pearl Aqua.
2. Visuals and talented performers
Here is a quick rundown and some basic information about the members.
Lee Jinki (이진기) or known as SHINee’s Onew is the leader of the group. He was born on December 14, 1989 and is the eldest in the group. He is known in the fandom as dubu (tofu) because of his gentle yet clumsy personality.
Kim Jonghyun (김종현) or known as SHINee’s Jonghyun was the main vocal of the group. He was born on April 8, 1990. He died last December 18, 2017 at the age of 27. His life may have been short but he lived well and inspired a lot of people through his songs. We love you, Jonghyun.
Kim Kibum (김기범) or known as SHINee’s Key is the vocal and resident fashionista of the group. He was born on September 23, 1991 and is the same age as Minho. He is known for his androgynous style in fashion and considered one of the staple fashion names in South Korea.
Choi Minho (최민호) or known as SHINee’s Minho is the rapper of the group. He was born on December 9, 1991 and is the same age as Key. He is known for his rap ‘Dibidibidis My name is Minho’ and is also an excellent actor.
Lee Taemin (이태민) or known as SHINee’s Taemin is the dancer of the group. He was born on July 18, 1993 and is the youngest (maknae) of the group. He is known for his god-tier dance skills and is considered one of the best dancers in the K-Pop industry.
And not only are they talented, all of them also have post-graduate degrees! They managed to squeeze in time to study in between their busy schedules.
Onew earned his master’s degree in Practical Music from Chungwoon University where he is also known to be attending a doctoral degree in Music Broadcasting. Jonghyun dropped out of school in 10th grade but earned himself a master’s degree from Myongji University in Film and Musical Studies. Taemin also finished the same masteral degree.
Key pursued a master’s degree in Culture and Education Contents Development at Woosuk University. Lastly, Mingo has a master’s degree in Film Acting from Konkuk University.
They debuted in 2008 with their title track 누난 너무 예뻐 (Replay) which immediately ranked at number 10 on Korean music charts and even peaked at number eight. During the first half of 2008, they sold almost 18,000 copies of their album. They first performed it on SBS Inkigayo stage.
This song garnered immense popularity which earned them their ‘Grand Slam Rookie’ title sweeping all the Rookie Awards during the year-end awards show that year.
In a Billboard interview, they revealed that they were surprised that they would all be singing for their debut track. Only Onew and Jonghyun were training to be singers at that time while the rest trained as rappers. Thus, they recorded the song for a full day instead of just a few hours. They also confessed that during that time, they honestly didn’t like the song because it was too straightforward.
Nevertheless, the song immediately caught on and swooned all the noona (누나). Noona is a term used by men to older women and can range from siblings to romantic partners.

4. The pioneer of the dance practice trend
One of the many fan services that idol groups provide for their fans is a dance practice video. You may have already seen a lot of this as most comeback songs performed on different stages have a dance practice version. And the pioneer of that trend in the K-Pop industry is none other than SHINee.
Their Replay dance practice video was the first dance practice released intentionally. And ever since, it became a trend among idol groups which gradually turned into staple content. In the video, you will see a cute little Taemin pop out in front of the camera!
Aside from Replay, no Shawol would forget the iconic Lucifer dance practicewith Taemin’s distracting striped shirt and Jonghyun’s tank top. The video which was uploaded in 2010 now has over 25 million views. This is a definite must-watch like a baptism into SHINee world.
5. The idol group who is the idol of your idols
Yes, you heard that right. Everybody loves SHINee including your idol groups. Some even got into K-Pop because of them. And here are some of their fanboys and fangirls.
EXO’s Chen. Chen is their labelmate who debuted under EXO in 2012. At first, he confessed that he didn’t really listen to idol music. But he changed his mind after hearing SHINee’s Please Don’t Go performed by Onew and Jonghyun. This sparked his interest in K-Pop and he broke away from listening only to ballads.
NCT. NCT is also a group under SM Entertainment who debuted in 2016. Members Haechan and Taeil were the most notable Shawols in the group. Haechan said that his first exposure to K-Pop was SHINee’s Replay. On the other hand, Taeil was more like Chen. He only started listening to idol music because of SHINee.
IZ*ONE’s Wonyoung. She revealed in a fansign that SHINee is one of her musical inspirations. Wonyoung debuted in MNET’s Produce 101 as center of the group (Top 1).
Kang Daniel. Kang Daniel is one of the most popular male idols in the industry after bagging the first position in the 2nd season of Produce 101. He revealed that he started dreaming about a singing career after hearing SHINee’s Ring Ding Dong (This song was voted as the worst song to listen to during exam season because it will just repeatedly play in your head).
